Mission

I am driven by my passionate beliefs in altruism, relationships, and autonomy. I pursue these passions by utilizing my core strengths of futuristic (able to look to and focus on the future), restorative (adept at finding problems and looking for solutions), and empathy. I plan to live out these values through opportunities where I am helping and learning to achieve wisdom and social justice that impacts women and healthcare. To do so, I will seek opportunities to use intersectional collaboration and make analysis-driven changes. When I face challenges or obstacles along the way, I will remember to find opportunities for self-discovery and make connections with others.

Plan

To become a global citizens scholar, I will utilize my mission statement during my time at the University of Cincinnati. My core beliefs focus on altruism, relationship-building, and maintaining a sense of autonomy. To adhere to these values, I will continue to seek opportunities on campus and in the Cincinnati community to demonstrate service for others and giving back in any ways that I can. The specific ways I can do this are donating blood, becoming a bone marrow and organ donor, and volunteering with UC organizations to better the world around me. I will continue to build relationships with my peers, educators, and mentors by engaging in on-campus events and clubs that promote meeting new people of diverse backgrounds. I have joined the club iCats, whose goal is to educate students on cultures they may not be otherwise privy to. It also encourages building relationships between international and domestic students through biweekly cultural workshops, team-building, and events that help to facilitate the meeting of other club members and students. I will maintain autonomy by making informed and educated decisions for myself regarding education, health, and living. I have done this by declaring my major based on my biggest academic interests, taking control of my healthcare, and searching for opportunities for individualism and responsibility.

Two of the major social justice topics I am most interested in are helping women and improving healthcare access and quality. I can aid in these efforts by attending workshops and events specifically for women such as the Women in Industry panel for undergraduate women in STEM seeking employment and networking opportunities in a field that is dominated by men. Another opportunity is the University of Cincinnati’s Society of Women Engineers, which offers a supportive network for women in engineering. In healthcare, I can make a difference by joining organizations on campus who are devoted to improving quality and ease of care with an aim of eliminating the disparity of healthcare among disadvantaged groups and those most vulnerable to health risks. An organization I have become interested in is EnableUC, which is a group of design-oriented students who work in teams to create prosthetics for those in need in the Cincinnati community. They work with local hospitals and healthcare organizations to provide very necessary tools for daily functioning and living.

A current goal is to attend medical school, and this is attributable to my core desire to help others through medical care. My ultimate goal is to make the quality of living better for those who have trouble attaining an enjoyable life. As a doctor, I would be a provider of a basic necessity for the public. Therefore, I have chosen to declare my major as Biomedical Engineering. Even if I do not attend medical school, I will have a career that is aimed at the innovation and revolution of the modern healthcare system, driven by analysis-driven change.

There are easily attainable goals that can get me closer to achieving my global citizen scholar mission. These include steps I can take during the upcoming semester. I can join the aforementioned organizations and clubs on campus and expand the scope of volunteer events I participate in. I am currently communicating with one of my instructors about a volunteer opportunity at a local high school where I would be tutoring students struggling in mathematics courses, which would lead me to develop stronger relationships with people in the Cincinnati community, the instructor ,and other UC students I would be working with. This would also allow me to make a visible, positive impact on young students.

I will continue to seek opportunities for self-improvement and growth through service and improving my own mental health. The University of Cincinnati provides a Counseling and Psychological Services resource for students struggling with mental health issues, and I plan to seek out this resource to become better adjusted and able to manage the setbacks that arise during my undergraduate career.

Overall, there are many ways to reach the status of global citizens scholar, and there is no better time to start than now. I have constructed short-term goals that will aid me in reaching my long-term goals. They all adhere to my core beliefs and values and will offer chances for greater interpersonal and intrapersonal relations and skills.
